Con Artist Games » Blog Archive » Cross ups, meaty attacks and 2 in 1’s, oh my! /* */

I spent a lot of time in the arcades as a kid. There were these Sunday sessions where you’d pay a whopping $12 and got about 4 hours of free play on all the machines in the building. It was an institution for my brother and friends. I toyed with the fancy light gun games of the time but I spent a large majority of my time on the two most crowded machines. Street Fighter 2 and Mortal Kombat.

Fifteen or so years later and I’ve got Street Fighter IV to chew on. I went into it saying to myself “hey, you know SF, you’re not bad at it at all. Those hours in the arcades and the weekends of hiring Super Nintendos just to play it have given you a pretty damn good idea of what you’re doing”.  Turns out I was so so wrong.

After watching this video, I discovered there’s a whole other level to SF that I’ve missed completely. Apparently most of this stuff is somewhat applicable to SFIV as well. Cross ups, meaty attacks, two in ones, reversals; all in the list of this secretive underground level of play. I understand now what defines a “good” player more so than I did before.

So diving back into SFIV, demoralised and downtrodden over my discovery of this new higher level of ability, I expected to get my arse handed to me on many occassions and I did. I play Ryu a lot and it helps in that you spend 90% of your time holding the opponent off but I can’t tell you how much time I’ve spent with my neck bent at an odd angle, spread eagle with a large Russian wrestler’s sweaty mits wrapped around my midsection.

Seems practice might be the only way I’m going to get there, but for the moment online play is just a wash for this aged warrior. Any tips?

It’s not necessarily your skill level that comes into play when you use Ryu. I’m pretty sure that Ryu is like the most popular character out there, so pretty much everybody knows what he can do, and what he can’t do. Try using another less popular character(and obviously practice with him/her a whole lot) and I think you might see improvements.

I don’t play SF (and i know i’m missing out), but i’ve noticed that a lot games have that whole other level of “good”. For example Halo. You can whip campaign to heck and back on legendary, but then you take a step inside of Live, and you’ll find yourself dead within seconds. Its a complicated thing, but its oh so much fun to master and exploit on others. So while i can’t give any tips, i can say, do what you can to master it and then whoop your friends. Its highly satisfying.

That’s true of most multiplayer games, there’s that initial basic ability then you see this higher end of technique.

Been playing TF2 a lot lately as well, massive difference between a new player and someone who’s put the hours into that game. Mostly stuff like tricky engineer building, rocket / sticky jumping, takes a slightly deeper understanding of the game past “run shoot capture”.

Jeremiah:
Street Fighter 4 has pretty much the same mechanics of street fighter 2 and street fighter 3 with a new form of parrying. Tekken is well tekken. So basically SF4 is still the same old 2D game just with awesome visuals. The faces of the characters before a super move is about to strike is pretty hilarious.

SF4: definitely putting your skill out on the table with the online component opens you eyes to the world of ridiculously good players, but I think having it is going to make the re-playability of this game infinitely more than if it didn’t have it. Anyone played SNK vs Capcom 2? I only ever played it with my friends, rarely on my own. In Japan there was an online fighting component with it, where here in North American PS2 was behind the times…anyways, they have huge tournaments with this game in Japan! Multiplayer is a god-send, and it will make everyone a better fighter ;)
