Make a sequel!

Posted by: Con in Rant, Sin Mark, Warfare

With my fourth game out there now, I’d have thought that over time that things might’ve changed. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining here but it seems that whenever I put a game out there’s INSTANTLY calls for a sequel. It’s flattering, yes. On the other hand, it seems I don’t get stuff right the first time around.

It really comes down to how I work I guess. I’m one of those people that struggles to have great conceptual ideas right off the bat. My games tend to start with a small idea (like shooting zombies) and evolve slowly over time and all the way through development.

Sin Mark is one of those evolutions, it started with the idea from Dan at Armor that we should produce a bow shooting game. I’d come up with the idea of mixing potions to make spells orginally and it was going to be a straight defence game where you defended a castle. That idea got pretty old pretty fast, so I started playing with the character movement and eventually it became the roaming adventure it is now.

So the core idea was there in the beginning but the evolution of it might’ve gone in the wrong direction. I dunno, Last Stand needed a sequel to add features I’d left out due to lack of technical knowledge at the time, Warfare 1917 suffered from that too. Sin Mark needs a melee attack, something that was suggested to me by a friend during the development, but I left it out because I’d wanted to get the game done. There’s a bunch of different reasons I leave things out or don’t implement obvious features, but it generally comes down to the fact that I’m writing different types of code for the first time and it’s hard to get right.

I’m working on a sequel to Warfare at the moment and adding a lot of the stuff that’s been requested, hopefully I can get it “right” this time. Will post more on it and my other new game (which I’m developing at the same time) soon.

Ha, nice choice.

Quick question:

Why was the Barrett in the first Last Stand but not in 2?

Thanks

You raise the bar very high every time with every game. Warfare is one of those games when you really raised the bar. It felt so real so when something happened that was not so real, looked bad. Warfare seemed something more than just a flash game to do it perfect and you came very lose to that.

And not only Warfare but all of your games seemed more that just a flash game. Those are games that always needs more and when you made them flash games even more. It’s not necessary all about wrong or right way, just more.

Nobody wants a sequel from a bad game or even a “good” game. We want sequel from games we love and we play a lot.

NewAge - I left it out because I was trying to make LS2 a bit more realistic. Plus it was overpowered and just thrown in for fun.

dead makis - I think expectations is a lot to do with how my work will be received now. Thanks for seeing the games as more than Flash games too, it’s something I work towards.

Francis - No worries about posting more. It’s good for me to bounce stuff like this around. The melee weapon suggestion came months ago from my best friend, since release yourself and loads of others mentioned it.

Oh and umm shouldn’t you make more newsletters when you are not making a game. Maybe you are always making one. Are you making [for Warefare] WWII, Korea, Vietnaum, First Gulf War, and second, or are you just making WWII, and Vietnaum?

It’s not a problem Francis, not being a pest. I’m constantly working on something, it’s my job, so posting just fits around it.

The new Warfare game will be revealed soon. I’ve decided on the setting, will post screens and more information in a few weeks.

Good job with the last stand series! The storyboard is so great! All of your games rock, but one question. Why not combine warfare+laststand? Good luck

Unless you mean you can order units or zombies and make them go into trenches?

Well if you did you would have to take out the trenches. But it would be good after both of the series and make it into a finale.

I see you loved warlords, I was sad the maps had no effect. When I first played Warfare I knew where it got its inspiration.

For a Warfare sequel, both sides should get squads with 20MM anti-tank rifles, which are also like snipers against infantry, just very expensive, and later on bazooka men, and mortar squads.

Don’t fret about not having alot of technical knowledge, what gives you the edge over more experienced game makers is the fact you have the creativity of an ARTIST. And every game you make becomes more and more well developed.

Well, the RPG replaced the overpoweredness of the Barrett. In fact, I had even more fun with it than with the Barrett.

So far Warfare doesn’t have money its a timer per unit.

2nd The 2mm Anti Tank Rifle was used by the Japanese. I am assuming Conartist is British because of the British pin on the website.

The British never fought Japan, their war was over in Europe. So if it is Europe then a anti tank rifle cant be in there.

There is already a morter strike, so suggesting a unit would be a waste.

If anything he should make flamethrower troops. Flamethrowers were used in both the Europe Campaign and the Japan Campaign.

But then again we are all assuming that Warfare 2 is going to take place in World War 2.

I think you looking at this all wrong. You can never get a game right. Every game has its down fall or something that could be improved. But once you do get that improved you find that something else has missed. And soon you find yourself spending years on a game that has only takes two days to beat. Sure you have a great game, but now you’ve just gone and made everyone wait. and soon no one will bother to play the games because they’ve found something better. Its all about balance.

You have created games of quality and originality that is rarely seen anywhere. I’ve looked all around for games equal with yours and few can really stand up. I’m truly awed by all of the games. Don’t give in to falling into ruts though. I’ve seen good games go to crap becuase they’re sequels are all the same. Just a vauge warning though, and probably not nessasary. Carry on shocking the world!
