Let’s do a Q&A! Post one question in the comments each and I’ll answer the most common and prevelant ones in the post.
Will this be 3D, Isometric, 2D or what?
It’ll be mostly 2D with only left and right movement, there won’t be as much depth. Have a look at this early mockup of an empty room, it allows for easy prop implementation and for rooms to be resized and made easily. Furniture and other props will sit in the foreground and background.
Will I be able to save my game?
Yes. At this stage I’m working towards having a number of save slots.
Is the main character coming back?
Yes, but not as the main character. You will create your own character.
Will there be classes?
Kind of, the “background” you choose will determine your starting skills. You can of course create your own custom “background” however.
Will there be vehicles?
At this stage, no.
Can we customise weapons?
Weapons will have attachments to improve their properties, I’m still figuring out the best way to implement this though.
Is there a time limit on how long you can play?
There will be events that will affect how long you can play, but the game has a very different structure. It may take hours to finish as opposed to 30 mins.
What kind of melee weapons will there be?
I’m aiming to have an “anything you can pickup” kind of approach to melee weapons. So everything from hammers to table lamps.
How will survivors work?
You’ll meet other survivors, some may choose to travel with you. When they do, they’ll fight along side you, following you through the world.
Can I change my characters clothes?
At this stage, yes. I’m looking to include clothing as items you find throughout the city. It’ll be broken down into clothes for head, torso and legs.
Will the things you carry weigh you down?
The inventory will work pretty much the same as it did in Fallout 3. Every item in the world will have a weight, you’ll have a weight limit that is tied to your strength.
What happens at the end, can I keep playing after I finish the main story?
I’m not entirely sure, I haven’t finished the story at this point. We have seen what happens to Union City after a while though…
How will day and night affect the game?
Moving around at night will need some extra care as the lack of light will come into play. You’ll need a torch handy to get around. Night time will lower the zombies ability to see you however as they suffer from the same horrible night vision as we do.
Will you be able to go inside buildings / every building?
Yes you can enter most buildings.
Is there going to be unlimited ammo or will we have to find ammo as we go?
Ammunition will be limited, how much will depend on which game mode you’re playing. Survivor mode will have less ammo available than Run’n'Gun.
Will there be different types of zombies like Left 4 Dead?
All the zombies from the previous games will be back (Army, SWAT, Fat Zombies, Clowns), I’ve got a few new ideas in store. Perhaps I can steal some off L4D now that they’re ripped off most of the zombie types I included in the first two games.
Will my character have a health bar? Or am I still instantly killed when zombies reach me?
You’ll have a health bar, but there will be certain situations where particular zombie types will attempt to finish you off if they get close enough.
Is there going to be equipment like kevlar vests, flashlights etc?
Yes.
How will the basic needs of a human such as water and food be implemented into the game?
At this stage, in the “survivor” mode, you’ll have a combined stat for both hunger and thirst. Each food or drink item you find will reduce that number. The higher the number, the more likely your character is to be affected by loss of stamina and other things.
Will there be traps?
Yes. What they are and when you’ll place them though, I’m not sure yet.
Can I equip survivors with weapons and clothes?
I’m not sure how that’s going to work yet, but at this stage, probably.
Of course, this is all subject to change. The game is in pre-production at the moment and I’m still planning large sections of it.
