Con Artist Games » Blog Archive » TLS: Union City - Alpha 0.6 - The one with search in it. /* */

Here’s an early look at the searching and inventory system for TLS: UC. It’s all very rough at the moment and you’ll see a bunch of small interface glitch type things as you play around with it. Also, there’s a bunch of icons and such missing and only short descriptions for items, but I hope it gives you an idea of the scope I’m dealing with here.

Things to know:
- Containers aren’t remembering their contents at the moment and will randomly populate every time you open them. In the final game they’ll populate with random items (depending on the type of room you’re in) the first time you open them and then be saved.

- Items in the search screen that are marked with a star are items that have been found as a result of either a luck or skill roll. This all happens behind the scenes but it’s an indicator for players who’ve put points into Luck and the Searching skill.

- You can open the Backpack via the button on the bottom or by hitting TAB.

- Zombies are turned off for the moment.

nvm about the link and its very slow the game i mean and with the flashlight my fps drops to 9 also are the boxes actually going to resemble that like against the wall i mean?

What do you think? Think I’d leave them as brown boxes?

i meant we wont walk into them or anything like that i mean are they just going to sit against the wall like that, but by the way great start and i like the search interface

Oh right. Sorry, misunderstood. They’ll be on the back wall yes. The issue with having containers in the moveable space is that it removes the ability to climb over them (same key as search).

This game is going together very nicely. I think that 2d will work better off than 3d (Yes, I know why its not 3d), for moving around and behind the crates would have been confusing and you would have to fix every tiny glitch for the rest of your life.

Now back to the search system:

What is your plan with crap items? Are they just there to make you want to look through the boxes before hitting the Take All button? Or will you be able to make stuff with them?

Oh, and will there be a currency?

Oh yes, and just to be annoying, will they always be brown boxes or will the look different?

Currency, yes. There’s Cash all over the place.

The junk items are in there to do exactly what you said, make people actually look through the containers rather than just hitting take all.

Brown boxes, of course not. They’ll look like their descriptions. It’s a placeholder graphic.

Refering to your 2nd comment response, yes, It would be a little better if you had put a searchable wardrobe, dresser, cabinent, etc. to it. Oh, I saw steel wool as one of the searchable items… have you by any chance thought of putting a 9-volt battery into the list of items? cause… 9-volt battery + steel wool = fire (just a little idea)

Or you could find a cigarette lighter. You’re not in the wilderness here :P

Excellent job again. The graphics are really shaping up and the engine looks really solid. I didn’t find a single mishap this time around and I’m happy to say it’s making me really look forward to the finished product. The only bug I found was that if you click delete item enough times in succession it causes the cursor to endlessly highlight every item it hovers over (multiple selections?).

Some things possibly worth noting:

Wondering if searching at night will be harder and rely more on skill and having the flashlight on in order to find better stuff.

Will you be able to carry unlimited weapons in the sack ala RPGs even with the weight limit?

Stackable inventory items, I noticed bullets do stack but items such as medkits, bandages, cash, and papers. Will cash accumulate or will it take up inventory space every time?

Possibility of upgrading to brighter flashlights, thermal stuff, or other things so as to not alert zombies or to be able to see better?

Loving the different character designs, will there be items that increase inventory space and alter outward appearance?

Stacking items, I’m avoiding. Trying to avoid the need for those annoying “Take/Drop How Many?” interfaces.

Outward appearance will be changable through clothing, armor and head gear.

Unlimited weapons within the weight limit, yeah. I did consider a bulk system, but they’re always a pain and end up with the player playing “inventory tetris” the whole time.

Alright……

1. To get it straight, you’ll have different ammunition for different effectiveness?
2. Can you smoke the cigarettes to lets say have a better aim for a short period of time?
3. Will the game pause if you search while a zombie is attacking you?

A. The flashlight is still “on” since I can still faintly see it.
B. I’m going to assume the cross hairs on the pistol don’t change because the guy is so wicked with the gun?

Thanks for showing us this.

1. Different guns have different calibres of ammunition. You need different ammunition types for different guns.
2. No.
3. Yes.

A. Yeah.
B. Skill is set to 80 of 100 in this demo.

i noticed the long tall storage box in the room next to the begging room there is always oranges and cash, also, i loved the fallout 3 reference, bottle caps ~ i wonder if these will be currency.

Yeah, containers will have set items that are always there, that way I can garuantee a certain amount of items will turn up in the world. The random junk and lucky/skill finds are added on top of those as you play.

i am loving how this game is coming along i think that you guys have done a great job so far. although just to be an annoying noob ill ask this:
1. Will you be able to sell you items?(crap items as such)
2. will there be any sort of shops?(kinda confused cuz of the money)

No and no. It’s the apocalypse. Some people will still think that cash has value, others might want certain items. Think of them as quest items that you’ll need to gather for certain people in order to convince them / get them to trade something.

Nice the game is defiantly getting fleshed out nicely. Just wanted to say i have been excited to see that a few of the elements of this game seem to resemble similar elements in Bethesda’s fallout 3. for example the inventory system and skill setup which i think is a great new addition to the last stand series and will defiantly translate well into a zombie apocalypse game like this, nice work. It is always exciting to watch your games grow and gain increasingly complex features that always seem to be dead on in terms of increasing the game’s depth and playability.

Thanks for the kind words, man. Much appreciated. I’m a huge fan of the Fallout series, especially 3. I’m also a big fan of RPG’s in general. On my second playthrough of Mass Effect 2 already!

wow this is really coming along nicely

out of curiosity whats the green pad on the left of the innovatory screen for

and how will weapon progression work, will there be enough of them and different rank of guns so that there are randome drops such as ‘gibbled shotgun’ which is less accurate or something like that or will weapon progression be more linier, pistil in area oen shotgun in area 2 exetra?

Green pad is the equip panel. Weapons will be found around the place, not sure on having different variants of the same ones at this stage.

so far, this game appears to be the best flash game ever made. I might just break under the anticipation for the final release. BUT, whenever i hit tab to open the pack like u said, the toolbar at the top of the screen gets selected (the one outside the game) and my player becomes completely unresponsive to the controls until i click on him. other than that, its fine, and i like the bottlecaps and junk loot, reminds me alot of fallout.

It’s good to see you have been busy slowly making this game. It’s a huge improvement compared to the first last stand. How you added a RPG aspect to the game was a great idea. I have a couple of suggestions however. I suggest that you make weapons slowly break over time as well as maybe make them jam from time to time. That way if a person has two of the same weapon they could use parts from the other one to fix it, like in fallout 3.

No, I’ve explained this a million times. Jamming and weapon degredation are the two most unfun things in video games. Added to fact sheet.

Excellent progress Con. The inventory system seems very intuitive. I like that you won’t be making us micro-manage our back packs whilst fighting off the undead.

This is friggin awsome! I’m loving the new search system! Things the alpha is similar to: Fallout 3, Dead Frontier, Days 2 Die. Also, PLEASE make sure there are as little loading screens as possible. The main problem with dead frontier is that when you do ANYTHING, you wait for a load. Oh yeah and, I observed you are a fan of fallout 3. Have you seen the trailer for fallout new vegas? The inventory system really looks nice. At one point, I found a book that said it gives a bonus to long rifles. Will you have to read it, consuming game time, have it’s effect be instantaneous, or make it a passive effect for as long as you have the book?

One problem, one question…
When I close the browser window, reopen and start the alpha again, the inventory won’t reset, so I still got all the stuff from the former session.
Question: Atm it seems that ammo has a weight of zero, regardless of how much of you carry around. Will this stay in the final versions?

Other than that, looking really good.

Inventory is saving at the moment. Ammo has zero weight, still deciding on that. Not sure I want to have people needing to throw ammo away becasue of weight restrictions.

I think you should keep the ammo at zero weight, sure it wouldn’t be as real, but then it would be alot of hassle out of the way for players… then again you could put minor weight on for the harder difficulties…?

Yeah, ammo really isn’t a weight factor in most cases anyway. 50 rounds of 9mm only weighs around 1lb, the only thing will be wanting to carry 100 rounds of .50 calibre as each round weighs in at about 1-2lbs.

Maybe it is just me but when I try to open the containers I always mistakenly press my mouse and fire my weapon, because it is a natural reaction. The better alternative, in my opinion, would be that when the character walk next to a container that container would be highlighted automatically, after that the player can just press E to open and search it. What do you think Con?

There will be a range for opening containers, so you’ll need to be in close proximity to them. Problem with auto-highlighting is that I want to have scenes where you’ll have 4 or 5 containers quite close to each other and stacked on top of each.

The amount of weight you are carrying should be more realistic and should affect your movement and weapon acquisition time.

Even the USMC, with load-bearing gear, does not ask its soldiers (usually, at least) to carry more than their own weight around in combat.

Secondly, ammunition weight, for things like .22lr you could easily carry 20k rounds of that around, but lets say, the 5.56 NATO/.223 Rem, 7 loaded 30 round magazines would have 210 rounds, while weighing the same as 4-5 20 round magazines of 7.62 NATO/.308 Win, with a mere half the capacity.

However, the .308 Win/7.62 NATO has 1.8-2.4x the energy level of the smaller .223 remington.

This makes survivors consider their loadout for the mission, am i fighting a bunch of crawlers i can execute with .22lr, or going after an special zombie menace (tanklike zombie, i guess) from half a mile away (barrett comes into mind) etc et al.

When you commented on Ewet8’s comment i think you would make a big miastake when you thought you wouldn’t like to make people throw away ammo because of the weight. Maybe on Run ‘n’ Gun mode no one would care… but on realism, keep it the the mode’s name, keep in realistic. I am not making a suggestion to make ammo weigh a bit… I AM TELLING YOU TO MAKE AMMO WEIGH A BIT.

Oh and by the way i see you’ve really thought about items you want in your game and your using everyday item’s that we would see all the time. Congratz, maybe next alpha we’ll see some searching AND shooting!

Con, this might be over the heads of some people. Remember Warfare 1944? Will gun and run be a simpler mode for them, or basically just as hard as the other one?

That’s idea behind the Run and Gun game mode. At this stage, stuff like ammo and aid items probably won’t be used. Health will auto-regen and ammo will be unlimited and your character will auto level based on the archetype you choose up front.

Danny, you of all people should know that I get hundreds of messages a week, from this site, from every site I submit games to, even email. If I spent time reading / responding / writing to all of those, do you think I’d have any time left?

I spend hours a week maintaining this sites comments. I don’t have time for anywhere else much.

In the above posts, you knida said that 1.food bears no importance to the character, because your health regenerates, do you think like in run’n gun mode you will be able to give food to other suriviours if their health is low??

2.And you said junk items are JUST there to stop you taking everything, do you think you will be able to trade those junk items for cash or other usefl items, instead of them just being there for no really good reason??

Run and Gun, food probably won’t even turn up in searches. Junk items may be useful to some characters in the game.

hey con artist why did you delete my..oh

well anyways the game is shaping up well i must say im surprised how quick its going but i can tell its not going to come out soon

The alphas are shaping up well and i like the idea of a take all button and being able to see when luck worked i hope this makes people more um..compelled if thats a word to put points in luck.

Just a question

can you somehow combine all the alphas (as in search killing the zombies with guns and maybe the point system it will still be an alpha but it just makes things more fun for people like me since it feels finished)

Yeah there’s loads of work to do.

In the current alpha, I turned the zombies off to get people to focus on the searching. I’m doing all this to get early early feedback on how stuff feels / is working. Putting the zombies in, I get a flood of “OMG Zombe WALKT IN BOXES!!1.” and nothing to do with the search. All about focus.

G’day Con!
Im an junior games journalist in HWT in Melbourne and my son Jake showed me your previous flash games whilst I was doing some research on the modern development of online flash gaming. Needless to say I was very impressed. Just wanted to wish you good luck, and if you would like a small article published about your game when it is released, feel free to contact me and I’ll see what I can do!
P.S: Enjoyed playing all of your Alpha games so far! :)

Hey thanks, I’ll definitely chase you up on that offer. Glad you and your son are enjoying it so far.

Will some of the “junk” be useable as melee weapons (like the paperweight)?

No, there will be junk like objects that are melee weapons though. Like table legs etc.

Will certain items be required to use other items (i.e. will one need a soup bowl and a spoon to eat a can of soup)?

I’m pretty sure people won’t mind if you drink straight from the can, table manners aren’t a priority. But no, there won’t be other item requirements to use certain things (besides weapon attachments).

Hey, dunno if anyone else posted something about this, but when you aim directly down, your guy looks extremeley screwed up; his arms, head and torso go haywire.

Yes. Yes they have. About a million times. I could give you an explaination including talks of radians, inverse angles and such if you’d like. I’m getting around to fixing it.

Con-

1st off, I am assuming that the white box below the item name will have a picture of that item in it?

Next- on the subject of weight, are you taking the approach that Bethesda did with Fallout and Oblivion- wherein your strength level directly affects the weight you can carry( I beleive this one might have been answered already. If so, sorry)

Lastly- Once again on the topic of Fallout, will Union City have many different available options, just like Fallout, or will it be a direct sidescroller with one way in and one way out?( As in, can we choose paths, or is there a set path for us to take?) Once again, you might have already answered that, if so sorry.

Very good so far! If you care for bugs, I found two:

In the center room, I climbed the box in the middle with the E key from the right side, with the Glock equipped. It froze and I couldn’t move or do anything, though I could still shoot.

Second, if you run the weapons completely empty, you’ll start the reload animation. The Glock will start and stop abruptly, and the M4 will do the entire “reload.”

Anyway, solid system, and looking quite good. The idea of having an arcade style mode and a realistic mode is good, too!

Something I’ve always liked for junk gear is making traps. Like: [shotgun shell + mouse trap + wire + nail = shotgun trip mine] (which does actually work IRL) I like it because you can’t just toss junk and make yourself an uberweapon, but only a weapon that works for a single use.

By the way, would you like some help on item descriptions, especially weapons? I’ve done a bunch of work writing weapons and combat articles, I’d be willing to write up descriptions, no strings attached. Or advise on accuracy of weapons, etc. I could cite previous work if you’re interested.

Thanks for the bug info, I fixed the constant reload when out of ammo bug yesterday and the other is known. Also thanks for the offer of description help, there’s not that many weapons to do, should be fine to do them myself. Cheers.

Ah, I see. Would you still like me to point out inconsistencies on heads up on weapons and such as I see them?

Out of curiosity, what is your look on weapons? Should their magazine capacity be the same as real steel, or tweaked for gameplay? Like when I look at the guns above, the Glock 17 actually holds 17 rounds, not 18, and a shotgun of the size in-game would hold 5 or 6 rounds, not 8.

The pistol in game has 18 rounds at the moment because I was playing with the ammo interface, been meaning to switch that back to 17. But the shotgun, it’s based off a Remington 870, they’re capable of taking up to 8 rounds in some variants, gotta remember this is a game though. It’s about balance, I can guarantee that if you approach this from a sim viewpoint, you’ll be disappointed.

But the actual Remington 870 in game, as in the size of the one the character uses is not large enough to hold eight rounds. It looks more like five. The eight rounders have a 18 inch barrel.

Though I definitely think it’d be nice to have the pistol grip shotgun with less rounds, then also have a full stock “combat” shotgun with the higher capacity and damage, but a long barrel that prevents you from using it too close.

Oh, naw, just from a curiosity standpoint. Like the Uzi in LS2 held 45 rounds instead of 32, since it fired faster and needed a bigger difference over the UMP. Totally makes sense when used right, and not a big deal.

I’d plead though that you leave signature weapons the same, like the 1911 pistol have 7, or 8 rounds with modern magazines.

Dude, it’s not a Remington 870, it’s a shotgun I drew in Flash. I’m not going to get into particulars about tube sizes and shit like that. Also, the weapons are sharing animations with similar weapon types, because of the sheer number of them. So all pump action shotguns will share the same fire / pump animation, all AR’s have the same fire / reload animations etc so they need to “fit” hence the size fudging. Besides that the only thing I need to worry about:
1) Does it look cool.
2) Does it blow zombies apart.

No more gun porn talk, I’m tired of it.

lol. Sorry about the gun overload. I thought you said it was based off the 870, so… Basically, I said: size was disproportionate to number of bullets.

Undeniably, it looks cool and blasts zeds, I suppose little else matters in such a utilitarian gun anyway.

Something I forgot to mention in the past was that all of the alphas had lagging audio for me. I skimmed over the comments for this post and the one before, and I didn’t see much mention of it. The game itself seemed to run smoothly, but the sound lagged about a half second or so for the guns.

My friend had the exact same problem. Both of our comps are far from high spec, but we don’t experience any normal lag.

Con,
I had a talk with the director of my department and showed him some of your previous works, which he was quite impressed with. We will unfortunately need to wait until after it comes out and it has become a hit with the masses, which I know it will be!
He is insisting that the game at its current state is nothing special and doesn’t look to be anytime soon (which we all know it will be :) ) but once it gets a bit more popularity, we can absolutely give it some press coverage!
So give me a shout if you would like any more details, and I will definitely be in touch as your game progresses.

love the way the game is turning out to be, and also, since this game seems so inspired by fallout 3 i just have to ask, will there be unique versions of weapons in TLS, similiar to fallout.

like a unique AK-47, or something, that has a clever name, and slightly better stats.

Sorry to double post, but I found another rather odd bug.

I don’t know exactly how I did this, but I went into backpack with tab, then clicked “all,” then suddenly a dark filter came across the screen and it gave me a bar to type text at the bottom. If I typed something and hit enter it’s end up on the darker portion of the screen, like the console for a source game. Couldn’t turn it off, either. I could still move and shoot, though the WASD text still ended up in the box.

Why does everyone say “like Fallout 3?” There’s other Fallout games…

The search boxes in the final product, are they going to have different skins? Or remain as brown boxes in the background?

Anyways, this looks like a great game so far.

I’m just wondering, will there be a diary? On TLS2 there was only a page with every city. Will there be daily pages in this game? And becuase you can probably do what you want at day, will doing stuff add parts of text to the page? That way, every day a new unique page will be made up from small pieces of text that are added when you do specific things.

Nope. Plan is to tell the story through conversations.

In the backpack are two boxes with no text in it. The other boxex have got all, aid, weapons, ammo and clothing. Are the last two boxes going to have a function? Like a filter for cash (cash, coins, bottlecaps) and for junk? That would be cool.

Yeah, one will be a junk filter. The other I’m leaving spare for the moment, may be for quest items.

Your Fallout reference made me happy.

Seems like things work. Stuff appears in boxes, you take them out, and they go into your inventory. For some reason, however, the TAB key didn’t open up the inventory and I had to use the button on the screen. Is that a glitch, or is it IE or Vista kicking me in the stones?

It should be working. Haven’t tried it in IE, will have to check it out.
